If you love being creative then you’ll enjoy using your talents to make special things – and what could be more special than a wedding. Whether it’s your own nuptials or the wedding of a friend or relative, you can make the occasion even more joyous by handcrafting something wonderful.

If you’re an experienced knitter or crocheter then you might be up for making a wedding dress – there are certainly some beautiful patterns to be found. But if that’s a bit ambitious then you could create a pretty shawl as a light cover-up either for the bride or the bridesmaids. Look out for our upcoming Summer Party special issue for a pattern and kit for a lacy knitted shawl! And of course, if the wedding is in the winter then there are plenty of opportunities to make cosy garments for both the bride and groom – be they shawls, wraps or gloves.

Another way you can handcraft a wedding is to make decorative items. Why not enhance the wedding banquet by placing votive candles on all the tables? If you make the crochet votive covers in issue 6 of Knit & Stitch Creative you can turn a simple idea into something special – choose yarns in shades that go with the wedding colour scheme.

And why not create some handmade table confetti? Use the pattern in Customising Techniques 27 for crocheted hearts to make as many as possible and then strew them among place settings on your wedding tables. Alternatively, make the hearts in colours to match the wedding outfits and use them to trim headbands, shoes and bridesmaids’ dresses, or wear them as brooches or mini corsages.

If you do go for a handcrafted wedding then don’t forget to share that special day with the creacrafts community!
